Higher education in the United States plays a crucial role in strengthening our national security. American universities are at the forefront of research and development in many areas that are critical to national security, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), computing, aeronautics, advanced communications and other defense-related technologies. Academic institutions routinely collaborate with government agencies and private industry to drive technological advancements that ensure the U.S. maintains a competitive edge in its military and intelligence capabilities.
Our national security rests on the talents of our people, and here, too, college is essential, providing the necessary education and training to ensure that the U.S. has a workforce capable of addressing complex national security challenges. Universities offer specialized programs in key areas such as international relations, cybersecurity, engineering, and data science, all of which are essential to national security. Graduates from these programs often join the military, serve in government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and the CIA, or work for private contractors that support defense initiatives.
Given the complex global, geopolitical challenges facing the United States in the twenty-first century, we cannot continue to safeguard our national security without a strong system of higher education. College strengthens us all, even if we never step foot on a campus.
